Exercising safely on the roads

5 Ways to Stay Safe While Running

Safety is a vital consideration whenever and wherever you’re running. If you want to enjoy a comfortable and trouble-free run, there are a number of factors you need to take into account.

At Luxe Fitness, we were delighted NSW Compensation Lawyers recently featured us in their blog about staying safe while exercising on the roads. The article, ‘Exercising safely on the roads in your neighbourhood’, highlights the importance of high visibility on the roads when exercising. A great way of doing this is by wearing reflective clothing and shoes.

But there’s more you can do! Here are our five top safety tips for all you runners out there.

1. Make sure you can be seen

As mentioned in the article, staying visible should be one of your main priorities if you want to keep yourself safe while running. Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially early in the morning and late at night. The more of your body you can cover with reflective clothing, the less risk there could be of you being involved in an accident.

2. Keep yourself cool

Running in the summer carries its own hazards, as high temperatures can cause heat exhaustion and a variety of related health problems. It’s vital to wear light, breathable clothing when you’re running in the hot weather to keep yourself safe and healthy.

3. Think about your direction

Running facing the traffic (on the footpath) makes it easier for you to see and react to oncoming cars, as well as making it more likely that drivers will see you.

4. Carry a light

If you don’t have enough reflective clothing, it’s wise to carry a light while running at night. This can help make you much more visible to drivers, as well as having the added advantage of helping you to see where you’re going – which could reduce the risk of injury.

5. Give your body the nutrition it needs

Lack of energy and dehydration can cause all kinds of problems when you’re running. If you want to perform at your best, it’s vital to fuel your body properly in advance. Before you set out, consider having a glass of water and half a banana. This can help provide your body with the hydration and energy it needs for a successful and enjoyable run.

Safety is not only defined by being seen and being safe while running or working out, it is also defined by how safe and supportive your clothes are. Check out our range of athletic wear to find the best match for you!

Summer Workout Tips

Summer workout tips by Challenge Me Fitness!

It’s hot. You’d love to sit in air-conditioned comfort or go straight to the beach or pub with your friends but you have goals and you want to achieve them!

We all know how much better we feel after a workout (I mean, whoever regretted a training session?!) and summer really is the ultimate time to get fit, active and enjoy the outdoors! So how do we stick to a consistent training regime to stay fit, healthy and beach ready throughout summer?

Read on for Challenge Me’s top 5 summer workout tips!

1. Set a goal

Before the summer festive season sets in, think of a goal you want to achieve. Is it that you want to learn a new sport, achieve a personal best weight with your squat or deadlift, take up yoga…whatever it is if you set a goal and track it weekly. Your motivation will stay high and you are much more likely to achieve your goal!

2. Make a plan and stick to it

Like anything in life, when you don’t have a plan, it is much harder to achieve the outcome. So plan ahead. Think about when you can fit in your exercise during the week (is it mornings, lunchtimes, after work, weekends…) and schedule it, just like you would any business meeting (or social event). But also don’t be afraid to change the type of training you do if it’s a beautiful day! Skip the gym for beach sprints followed by a refreshing swim – there are so many more options to be active in summer that we should definitely embrace them!

3. Get a workout partner

It’s much harder to avoid training when it means letting someone down. So grab a friend, partner, family member or colleague and make a commitment to train together each week. You will not only stay more motivated but chances are you will enjoy your workout more too! Treat yourselves after with a protein shake or delicious healthy meal!

4. Buy some cool new summer workout gear

Who doesn’t feel better in new threads?! Go and buy some new light summer active wear in fun bright prints and you’ll want to train just so you can wear them!

5. Try a home program so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your house (or your heating!)

If you find that on busy days you just want a quick workout, try a home workout program like the one offered by Challenge Me Fitness. This program is high intensity, using only your bodyweight. All you need is a small space in your bedroom, lounge or garage and 35 minutes of your time! Click here to try a FREE home workout from Challenge Me Fitness!

So there you have it! There really are no excuses for not sticking to your exercise regime this summer and achieving your fitness goals!

Please do remember to increase your fluid intake in summer, practice good sun protection and avoid training during the hottest time of day.

How Your Friends Affect Your Health

How your friends affect your health & wealth
By Bec From The Way Up Fitness

When deciding who you spend your time with, there are a few things to remember. You are the sum of your 5 closest relationships. If you show me your friends, I'll show you your future.

It's easy to think we can overcome poor influence around us. Often we aren't even present to the question, "What damage am I doing to myself by associating with people who I can't learn from and don't inspire me?"

You could think of yourself as a sharpened arrow. Eventually, if you continue to thud against something dull, you will become blunt. This bluntness manifests in poor decision making, procrastination and lack of ambition.

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster and if you stare into an abyss, the abyss also glazes into you."
Mark Twain

People who challenge us hold up a mirror. They challenge our intellect and our choices. They make us reason, and think more clearly. They force us into taking a position. Into having an opinion.

The growth and remodelling we all crave so deeply happens in these moments.

OUR GREATEST PRESENT NEED IS SELF ACTUALISATION. WHAT A MAN CAN BE, HE MUST BE. WHICH IS TO SAY THAT WE MUST RELENTLESSLY PURSUE THE THING IT IS WE FEEL WE ARE HERE TO DO.

I believe the self eventually only finds actualization in giving itself to some higher goal outside oneself, in altruism and your own version of spirituality (of search for higher meaning). This leads to self-transcendence.

Here is a good exercise.

Mother Theresa is about to be made a saint. And I'm not arguing. She devoted her life to helping others in desperate need.

Now take Bill Gates. He ruthlessly built a business empire that made him the richest man in the world year after year. He has now used that power and influence to save more than 6 million lives. There will be millions more saved by him and his foundation.

Who should be the saint? Mother Theresa hugged. Bill Gates innovated and then he gave.

Now mother Theresa was clearly put on this earth to serve the poor. And Bill Gates was clearly put here to create business and tech. But each were able to self transcend and lead lives of altruism.

It's very easy for me to lie to myself under the disguise of helping others. But I'm not helping the world by playing a small game and neither are you. Be relentless in your pursuit of your own personal truth. Why are you here and what are you here to do?

Be the best you can be at this. Add something to make the world better. By doing this you will be helping more people than you re

Tips on getting through a busy week

Tips on getting through a busy week and still managing to follow a great exercise regime!

Post by Chloe' from @gettingthereinactivewear

As we all know, it is a very hard task to get through the working week and still manage to fit in an exercise regime (sometimes even hard to manage fitting in any exercise at all!). I am all too familiar with the feeling of not fitting in my training - due work stress and demand. The key to balance however, comes down to one simple thing, and that is SLEEP!

Some of us sit up watching TV to all hours of the night + eat late dinners and even consume caffeine into all hours of the evening... This is not good! It is important to have 7-8hours rest every night and in order to do this, you need to switch off the rubbish - nothing is good after 8pm anyway (just joking haha but you can just record and watch your fave shows on the weekend).

Get up early!

Once you've had your rest set your alarm for 5am (even earlier if you have to). I set mine for 4am, but that is because I'm a bit loopy and have to drive from the Gold Coast to Brisbane every morning during peek times. I know that I won't go in the evenings, so I get it all done in the morning before the large drive and day at work. Remember if you get up early, right there you have that edge over most people around you. You will be exuberating with positive vibes.

Set yourself a timeframe!

I go to the gym for 50mins before work. Any longer I get bored, and in 50mins I can get an extremely great workout for my chosen body part. i.e. I may spend 50mins on legs for the session (including glutes etc into that timeframe). If I know I'm only going for that amount of time rather than an hour or more, I feel extremely motivated because I know how quickly the session goes.

Get yourself some amazing activewear!

This point is the heart and soul of my Instagram page. I feel that other than sleep, there is no better way to get yourself to the gym. If you have some cute gear to look forward to wearing, you will get out of bed and be at it in no time at all! Luxe Fitness has some of the best brands and has become part of my reason for waking up and getting my butt into action.☺️

I hope you find these tips helpful - but remember in order for anything to happen, you need a good night's rest. You even need rest to purchase your activewear ;) because you never know, you might make a silly choice if you're feeling drowsy, stressed and slightly out of it after that hectic day of work; and we can't have anyone training in awful attire now can we!

5 THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE I STARTED TO WORKOUT

5 things I wish I had known before I started to workout
Written by Rebecca from Way Up Fitness

1. Carbohydrates aren't the enemy

Do we need to reduce carbohydrates (carbs) under most circumstances in the fat loss phase? Yes. Do we need to cut them out completely? No. Cutting out a complete macronutrient (fat, carbs, protein) from your diet does not help to achieve your goals. In fact, every macronutrient is an essential part of a healthy diet. Carbs in particular give your cells, tissues and organs energy. It keeps everything going. You see, banning them from your plate will leave you tired, with no energy. When it comes to carbs my biggest advice is to choose quality over quantity. Not all carbs are created equal, the quality is important. For example a piece of white bread does not have the same beneficial impact as a bowl of brown rice. The goal is to avoid quickly digested and refined carbs as much as possible. These foods include products made of refined grains such as bread, pasta, cereals, cakes. Instead, go for slowly digested carbs that keep your blood sugar stable.

Stable blood sugar levels means focused energy throughout the day, you will feel energized.

"Not only is the quality of the carb important but also the timing of when you eat it. "

We all have different body types and different body composition. What works for you, doesn't necessarily work for someone else. However, you never go wrong if you stick to the rules "carbs are earned after exercise". Your body requires good quality carbs and protein after exercising to help repair muscle tissues and help to build lean muscles. If you want to know more about different body types and nutrient timing, click here to get to know more

2. Weight training does not make you bulky

I remember when I thought lifting weights would make me "bulky". I thought I would end up looking like a female body builder the more weight I lifted. Let me assure you that weight training does not make you bulky. Really, it doesn't. You need to train A LOT, and eat A LOT, to look like a bodybuilder. There is a reason why it's a professional sport. If you train with weights 2-3 times a week, do cardio, stretches and eat lean, your body will look defined and toned but certainly not bulky.

Also, I was never sure whether to give my muscles a rest in between sets or incorporate loads of intensity techniques such as jumping jacks, circuit training as an attempt to burn more fat. Here is the thing, if we techniques to increase intensity as described above, that simply means we can no longer use a heavy enough load help increase and tone your muscle mass. Strenght training should be hard and heavy, with the appropriate rest intervals. Speaking of rest;

"you won't achieve better results if you train every day"

In fact, too much training interferes with gaining muscle. Your body doesn't change in the gym, it largely occurs outside.

3. Crunches won't give you a sixpack

Crunches are certainly not the best exercise choice if you are trying to work on your abs because they strengthen only a few of the muscles in your core. You're better off doing some moves that work the entire core area such as varieties of planks, bicycle legs, ab wheels and more. Your abdominal muscles will only show if your body fat percentage is low enough. Doing core exercises but still sticking to an unhealthy, high-calorie diet will not give you a defined mid-section.

4. Flexibility and stretching

Sitting the whole day at the office in front of a computer didn't do anything for my flexibility or fitness. Sooner or later my lower back started to kill me and touching the floor with my fingers used to be a real struggle. Not the best place to be when you are in your mid-twenties. I never really took stretching seriously or thought of yoga as an addition to my workout routine. In fact, I thought it was a waste of my time. Well, the worse my back pain got the more open I became to the idea of giving my body a good stretch. The result speaks for itself; I not only got rid of my back pain but also gained a new range of movements and my form at the gym to lift weights to much better. I only can recommend stretching to everyone as part of the injury prevention portfolio. Do it regularly and you soon will feel a change in your body and well being.

5. Professional coaching

My first experience in the gym was intimidating. I had no idea what to do and how to use the equipment. Instead of getting professional advice (because I was a student and broke) I just tried to copy the people that looked like they were gym experienced. As a result, my form was sloppy, got injured, and my progress, if any, was very poor. Steve and I work out a lot together and his cues on how to adjust my posture when performing an exercise, how to isolate and engage the target muscle made my workouts much more efficient. Time-wise as well as goal oriented. Time is precious; don't waste it in the gym with poorly performed exercises that might result in an injury over time.

Recover Better to Perform Better

Recover better to perform better
Written by Rebecca from Way Up Fitness

When training people physically, you could argue that they can be broken down into two distinct groups; people that like to stay in their comfort zone, and people that like to be uncomfortable.

Physical adaptation occurs when your body is challenged in new ways. When it experiences stimuli it has never encountered before. It grows and changes, gets stronger and faster and enhances it’s ability to be resilient, only when it is forced into situations where it becomes uncomfortable.

Every system in your body, no matter how micro, or macro that system may be, works in a continuum of performance and recovery.
All of your systems, including you as an entire being, require a refractory period, where it can recover from the stimulus that has been applied to it. This is a fundamental principle of human physiology (change) and performance alike.

Training your ability to recover, in the same way as you train your ability to perform will result in a large increased overall training performance, and will allow your body to make the changes that you train for. You have to assume that if you aren’t able to fully switch yourself off, then inherently you will lack the ability to fully switch yourself on. You will exist somewhere in the purgatory between your performance ceiling and floor, never quite being able to reach either.

Whilst there are many strategies you can employ to improve your ability to recover from exercise, ranging from smaller interventions to help you recover from, for example an interval run, before you commence your next run 30 seconds later, to recovery from long weeks of training and workload.

Here are some examples:

Learning how to diaphragm breathe properly and use it to aid in affecting the parasympathetic nervous system (think the de-stress part of your nervous system).

Learning 3 stage breathing (breathe ups) to once again affect the parasympathetic nervous system.

Get more sleep.

Eat a better diet.

Improve the quality of your soft tissues (trigger point and foam rolling work)

Stretch.

Visualization of the next performance you are about to embark upon.

Meditation.

To gain precise control of a system that functions linearly, only two points of control are required; a braking system, and an accelerating system. Your nervous system essentially features this in the form of sympathetic innervation (think high performance requirements, but also situations of constant stress and failure to relax and recover) and as mentioned, para-sympathetic innervation (the opposite of sympathetic). Like anything, your ability to gain a measure of control over these systems is trainable.

In the life you lead when you aren’t looking to improve your performance physically, the ability to engage your para-sympathetic system is critical. Anyone experiencing constant self described high stress environments, poor sleep, fogginess of thinking or constant sub-par performance socially and professionally, will find that utilizing techniques to improve recovery and mindfulness (presence) will begin to improve the afflictions listed above.

Having an addiction to past evaluations as opposed to a present one, is a cognitive bias which severely affects your ability to continue to grow and outperform your prior self. Changing your mindset around what performance is fundamentally, and approaching it from a new angle, could well prove to be the silver bullet cure you are looking for. By simply taking a few deep breathes into your belly (diaphragm breathing) and returning to the present moment and choice, you will begin to experience the impact the para-sympathetic nervous system can have on your social, professional and training goals.

Try the following;
Hold your palms in front of you, fingers facing up, a few centimeters apart, shoulders relaxed. Now breathe in, while gently expanding your fingers putting your mind on all your fingers. Your breath and mind should softly shoot to the end of your fingers. This inhalation is slow and purposeful, gently pulling oxygen into the bottom of your belly, about 5 centimeters below your navel, then moving that energy from here to your fingers. Once complete, gently exhale and release your fingers. Let your mind fall asleep. Relax your hip joints and let everything relax into soft, quiet awareness. Once exhalation is complete, re-energize and begin again. Do this for a minute, and see how you feel.

This sporty beauty started Vie Activewear in 2013 and is based in both LA and Sydney. The brand was born from a love of working out, working hard and loving fashion.

6.30am
Noa looks gorgeous in her Rockell Snow Leopard tights, ready for her workout of choice, a seriously intense HIIT session. Ain’t nobody got time for lazy workouts when you’ve got little ones in tow and a business to run!

8.30am
Vie Active's team morning ritual consists of a coffee run as we do our Work in Progress meeting. Today’s order – 1 almond cap, 1 almond chai and 1 rice milk flat white. In Sydney we love our local Greenhouse Coffee (they also make the best raw chocolate) and in LA we can’t go past Gjelina Takeaway.

10:00am
Our LA office is adorned with mood boards of people, places and prints that inspire us! Our collections draw inspiration from so many influences – so when we’re inspired by something we make sure to add it to the board. Here is a sneak peek of the mood board for our next collection…

12.30pm
Workout Time - Each week we try out new studios for our weekly team workout from HIIT to Barre, we like to mix it up! This week our Sydney Team headed to Surry Hills for a Barre Cardio Workout at Barre Body.

3.30pm
Post Workout - It's snack time! We’re lucky both our Sydney and LA offices are in health food hubs, with great Sushi places close by!

5.30pm
We always like to mix up our days and love fitting in a photoshoot or two! Here is a sneak peek of the Body Pass video shoot featuring our latest Satellite Orchid print! We are very excited about our upcoming collaboration – so stay tuned!

7.00pm
Team Treats - We finish off the day with team treats (these only happen once a week) and we have quite a challenge making these free of sugar, dairy, gluten, peanuts, almonds and cashews - but the challenge makes it even more fun. This week we had a mix of raw chocolate, vegan crackles, salted caramel tahini and fresh dates!

Moving Comfort Sports Bras - Comfort and Support

We naturally design clothes for a woman’s body, whatever that body was meant to do. We want women to feel supported and we encourage women to never feel limited by anything.

Knowledge, expertise and high standards shape the fit, fabric and function of every garment we design.

The important thing is that every woman finds her Moving Comfort.

Moving means moving
It doesn’t matter whether your running, walking, weight training, yoga, martial arts, skiing, snowshoeing, rock climbing, horseback riding, golf, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, inline skating…we naturally understand and design activewear for a woman’s body, whatever that body was meant to do. We encourage women to never feel limited by anything.

Quality comes first
We understand the kind of support and freedom needed in sportswear, and how it should feel on your body. We know what keeps women warm and dry when it’s cold and cool and dry when it’s hot. Knowledge, expertise and high standards shape the fit, fabric and function of every sports clothing we design. Our care and unwillingness to compromise is what makes our products the highest quality and reliable.

Fit affects everything
Keeping fit improves every aspect of a woman’s life: reducing the incidence of heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, depression, drug and alcohol abuse. If a woman is more comfortable when she’s working out, she’s more likely to keep at it. That’s why we view our technically superior fitness wear as a means to encourage women to get fit and stay fit.

Running Responsibly
Always act with integrity, respect, and excellence. We apply these principles to our relationships with customers, consumers, and environments in which we run our business.
